The questioner : Does ongoing charity reach the deceased? And does wealth reach the deceased in reward?
The Shaykh : Regarding ongoing charity, we must know that the one who established it is the deceased himself before he died. For example, a man who built a mosque; this is ongoing charity. A man who endowed a water source; this is ongoing charity. A man who dug a well for people to draw water from; this is ongoing charity. A man who repaired a rough road to make it easier for people; this is ongoing charity. As for the charity given by some relatives after a person’s death, this reaches the deceased, but it is not what is intended by the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):. At that point, the question remains: Is it better and more preferable for a person to give charity on behalf of his parents, or to pray on behalf of his parents, or to fast on behalf of his parents after their death, or is it better to make du'a for them? The answer is that it is better to make du'a for them, following the guidance of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), when he said: Sahih Muslim 1631.
