How to Pay Zakah from Invested Money
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q78: The questioner says: I have a sum of money amounting to seven thousand Egyptian pounds, and I have placed it in a commercial investment. Is zakah due on it? What is its amount? To whom should I give it? Do I pay zakah on the principal only, or on the principal and the profit?
A78: Zakah is obligatory on money invested in trade. If it reaches the nisab, zakah is due on it, and it is also due on its profit. The profit follows the principal and is purified along with it. So you must pay zakah from this money when the lunar year has passed on the principal, adding the profit to it. If you pay zakah on the whole, it is one-quarter of one-tenth. As for to whom you pay the zakah, you pay it to those whom Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) specified in His saying:[At-Tawbah 9:60] . You pay the zakah to one of these eight categories.
You give it to the poor and the needy, and there are many of them who are in straitened circumstances and in need of it, so you pay the zakah to them.

Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler - an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
