Paying Zakah Every Lunar Year

Fatwa No. (18342)
Q: After I came to Saudi Arabia to work in one of the institutions, I was constantly sending checks to my brother in Egypt . After a while, I was surprised to find that he had deposited all my money in one of the interest-based banks. I immediately told him: Take my money out of this bank; because it deals in riba, and this is forbidden, forbidden. He said to me: Okay, I will take it out of this bank. After a period, I went down to Egypt and he told me: I put your money in a project (a furniture exhibition). And since he put my money in this project, I became a partner with him and a third brother of ours in this project. He entered me into this project officially by writing the papers and a partnership contract. This was done and registered in the court. After eight
months, they removed me from this project officially as well by dissolving the partnership contract from the court. After my exit from the partnership, I have not received my money to this day, and this money would help me get married because I am in need of this money for marriage. The summary of the above is that the money stayed in the bank for a period of less than a year, then entered a project for a period of less than a year as well, then exited the project more than a year ago – so is there zakah that I must pay in all three cases or not, and if I pay zakah more than what the Wise Lawgiver prescribed, is it a sin on me or must it be specified regarding the period and the money, which is 25 per 1000 riyals, and is the obligation of zakah intended to be zakah on wealth or zakat al-fitr or does it include all of the above? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good
A: It is obligatory for you to pay the zakah of your wealth whenever a lunar year passes over it, so you count the years that have passed and you pay the zakah of the wealth at the rate of a quarter of a tenth (2.5%) for every year. Zakat al-fitr is not the same as the zakah of wealth; because it is a purification of the body. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
