Explaining the importance of zakah and the conditions for its obligation

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q1: The questioner, Abu 'Abd al-Rahman from Jeddah, says: We ask you, may Allah reward you, to speak about zakah, its importance, and its conditions, because there are people who have not learned about the importance of this zakah, and they are ignorant of it, especially the young people who have not gained knowledge of the religion. So what is your guidance?
A1: Zakah is the third pillar of the pillars of Islam, and it is the companion of prayer in the Book of Allah the Mighty and Majestic. It is an obligatory duty upon the wealthy in their wealth, a right for the poor. Allah the Exalted said:
(24) And those within whose wealth is a known right (25) For the petitioner and the deprived -وَالَّذِينَ فِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَعْلُومٌ (24) لِلسَّائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِ
[Al-Ma'arij 70:24-25]
. And Allah the Exalted said:
Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah]إِنَّمَا الصَّدَقَاتُ لِلْفُقَرَاءِ وَالْمَسَاكِينِ وَالْعَامِلِينَ عَلَيْهَا
[At-Tawbah 9:60]
, to the end of the verse. So it is a prescribed right, not a voluntary gift. It is prescribed and a pillar of the pillars of Islam. Whoever
denies its obligation is a disbeliever. He is given the opportunity to repent, and if he repents, well and good; otherwise, he is killed. And whoever is stingy with it while acknowledging its obligation, it is taken from him by force, even if that leads to fighting him, if he has power, strength, and protection. Then he is fought; because Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) fought those who withheld zakah, and he said (may Allah be pleased with him): "I will fight whoever separates between prayer and zakah. By Allah, if they prevented me from a she-goat," and in another narration: "a rope that they used to pay to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I would fight them over it." And Allah obligated zakah in the wealth of the wealthy, and that is with conditions: The first condition: as is known, Islam. Zakah is not taken from a disbeliever. The second condition: owning the nisab (minimum threshold for zakah). The nisab varies according to the types of wealth. Currency has a nisab, grains and fruits have a nisab, camels have a nisab, sheep have a nisab, and cattle have a nisab. So the nisab varies according to the types of wealth. Owning the nisab is a condition for the obligation of zakah. And it is also a condition for its obligation: the completion of the hawl (a lunar year of possession); because of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him)
(peace and blessings be upon him):
There is not Zakat on wealth until Hawl (one year) has passed.لا زكاة في مالٍ حتى يحول عليه الحول
Sunan Ibn Majah 1792Hasan (Darussalam)
. And that is for those that are not subject to annual assessment: grains and fruits. These are paid out when they are obtained from the crops and the fruit, the uprooting of the palm trees and the grapevines, and also the harvesting of the crops. Allah the Exalted said:
give its due [zakah] on the day of its harvestوَآتُوا حَقَّهُ يَوْمَ حَصَادِهِ
[Al-An'am 6:141]
. So the time for the zakah of grains and fruits is when they are taken possession of after they have ripened and become sound. It is a mandatory obligation upon every Muslim who owns the nisab of any type of wealth that he must pay it, not as a voluntary gift, but as an obligation and a pillar of the pillars of Islam. And even if it is called sadaqah (voluntary charity), it is an obligation, a prescribed and obligatory charity.
