Explanation of the prescribed nature of standing at the grave of the deceased after burial and making du'a for him

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q565: The questioner asks: What is the ruling on standing at the grave of the deceased after burial and making du'a for him?
A565: It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that, regarding the deceased after burial, he would stand at his grave, make du'a for him, and seek forgiveness for him.
He would say to his companions:
Ask forgiveness for your brother, then ask that he may be strengthened, for he is now being questionedاستغفروا لأخيكم وادعوا له بالتثبيت، فإنه الآن يسأل

Therefore, what is prescribed for Muslims when they have buried the deceased and finished the burial is to stand at his grave, seek forgiveness for him, and ask Allah for his steadfastness; for this is the time when the two angels question him in the grave. They should say: “O Allah, forgive him. O Allah, grant him steadfastness.” And they should repeat this blessed du'a, for Allah benefits him thereby; because the du'a of Muslims is hoped to reach them and for them to benefit from it. The du'a of the living for the deceased is what is prescribed, not the reverse, which the ignorant and the grave-worshippers do, namely that they ask the deceased to make du'a for them, seek forgiveness for them, and intercede for them. This is the opposite of what Allah and His Messenger prescribed, and this is enmity toward Allah and His Messenger. What is prescribed is the reverse: that the living one makes du'a for the deceased and seeks forgiveness for him. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. And Allah knows of your movement and your resting place.
[Muhammad 47:19]
And when he passed by the graves, he would face them with his face, may Allah's prayers and blessings be upon him, and say:
O people of the graves, may Allah forgive you. You are our predecessors and we are in your footsteps. O Allah, do not deprive us of their reward and do not test us after them, and forgive us and them.يا أهل القبور يغفر الله لكم، أنتم سلفنا ونحن في الأثر، اللهم لا تحرمنا أجرهم ولا تفتنا بعدهم واغفر لنا ولهم
As for these innovations that are done with the funerals, from the matters that people have become accustomed to, which have no basis in the Shari'ah of Islam, it is obligatory to be cautious of them, to prohibit them, and to warn against them.
