Ruling on combining and shortening the prayer for one who has prepared for travel but has not yet departed
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q508: The questioner says: I travel approximately every week, and the time of departure is at midday. I stop the car on the road to perform the prayer. Is it permissible for me to combine the Dhuhr and Asr prayers at home before I travel? Please advise us on this, and may you be rewarded.
A508: If the time for Dhuhr enters and you have not yet started your journey, it is obligatory for you to pray Dhuhr in its time in full, without shortening. As for the Asr prayer, if the journey will end before the time for Asr expires, then you should pray Asr in its time when you arrive, even if it is at the end of the time for Asr. However, if the journey continues from Dhuhr until sunset, such that the time for Asr expires while you are in the car, as you mentioned, and you cannot stop because the owner of the car does not agree to stop, then if the matter is as you described, there is no harm in combining as you mentioned; because this is a case of excuse that permits combining, but with completing the prayer. If you pray Asr with Dhuhr while you are in your home and intend to travel afterwards, then you should pray Dhuhr and Asr in full, each with four rak'ahs, and there is no harm in combining; because combining is permissible in such a
situation. As for shortening, its time has not begun; because shortening is only permissible after leaving the homes that are your place of residence.
