The first question of Fatwa number ( 19842 )
Q1: O esteemed Shaykh, may Allah forgive you. I am the father of five children, praise be to Allah. One is a girl and the rest are four boys. Unfortunately, due to my negligence, I only completed two 'Aqiqahs: one for the girl, as is known, and another for the eldest boy, meaning the eldest boy still has one remaining. Thus, the total number of 'Aqiqahs for the rest is (7). What should I do? Please advise us, may you be rewarded. Knowing that I currently have debts of more than one hundred thousand riyals, if it is necessary to perform all the 'Aqiqahs, how should I do it? May Allah guide you.
A1: It is recommended (sunnah) to perform the 'Aqiqah for all your children: two sheep for a boy and one sheep for a girl, provided you have the ability to do so, even if you have to borrow the cost, if you are able to repay what you borrowed later. This is following the example of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who performed the 'Aqiqah for al-Hasan and al-Husayn , and the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did so. Imam Ahmad said: "If a man borrows and I hope that Allah will provide him with the means to repay it, he revives a sunnah. And if you are only able to do one, and you perform one for a boy just as for a girl, that suffices, if Allah wills, and you have the reward from Allah the Exalted." Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said: "I do not know of any scholar who differs from this." And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
