Fatwa No. ( 16477 )
Q: The accident happened to me ten years ago, resulting in a hemiplegia that left me unable to control my urination and defecation. The doctor advised me not to fast, and I have not fasted Ramadan for ten years. I know that it is obligatory for me to feed a poor person for each day. Is it permissible for me to pay money in place of the food, and how much do I pay for the ten years? Do I pay it to one person or several people? Please inform us; may Allah reward you.
A: If the situation is as you described in the question, that you are unable to fast continuously, then it is obligatory for you to feed a poor person for each day with a quantity of one and a half kilograms of the staple food of the country; based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:184], and paying money in place of the food is not permissible; because it is contrary to the explicit text.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
