Fatwa number ( 17885 )
Q: Does supplication alleviate calamities, and does Allah soften things for us as a result of supplication ? How is that possible when Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, sends calamities upon people even though they are supplicating to Him?
A: Supplication is an act of worship of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and Allah has commanded us to supplicate to Him, saying the Exalted:[Ghafir 40:60] And He, the Exalted, said: [Al-Baqarah 2:186] .
Supplication alleviates calamities, or averts them, or averts something greater than them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Ibn Majah 4022Da’if (Darussalam) . When calamities occur, they expiate sins and raise ranks. It is obligatory for the Muslim, when a calamity befalls him, to be patient with it and to seek reward from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and not to complain about the divine decree and destiny. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.
And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.
Supplication alleviates calamities, or averts them, or averts something greater than them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
nothing repels the Divine decree except supplication
