Fatwa No. ( 14460 )
Q1: A man was ill and was hospitalized, and he missed several days of Ramadan. He recovered and made up some of the days from the previous Ramadan, but then this Ramadan came and he had not completed making up what he had missed from the first one. Is it permissible for him to make up the missed days after the second Ramadan, given that he intends to make up the previous days?
A1: It is obligatory for the person mentioned to complete making up the days he fasted for due to illness, even if it is after another Ramadan. He must also feed one poor person for every day he makes up after the other Ramadan, if his delay was without a valid excuse until another Ramadan caught up with him.
Q2: A man was afflicted with an illness for four years and did not fast Ramadan during that time. He recovered from the illness ten years ago and has been fasting
but has not made up the four past years during which he was ill. What should he do?
A2: It is obligatory for the person mentioned to make up the fasting of the month of Ramadan for the four years in which he was ill, and to feed one poor person for every day; because he delayed making up the fasts until another Ramadan out of negligence. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
