The Ruling on Seeking Blessing from the Dead
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q189: The questioner asks: What is the ruling on seeking blessing from the dead? And what is the legal criterion in such a matter?
Vol. 189: The permanence and establishment of blessing are from Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Blessing is sought from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and not from anyone else. Allah the Exalted said:[Ar-Rahman 55:78]. Allah is sought for blessing through His names and attributes, but the created being is not sought for blessing, because he does not possess the power to create blessing or establish it, for it is from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). In the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) expedition to Hunayn, when some of his Companions who had recently embraced Islam—meaning they had converted late and had not learned sufficient knowledge—passed by a people who had a tree around which they would gather and hang their weapons there for the sake of blessing, these newly converted Companions said: “O Messenger of Allah, make for us a tree of Anat, just as they have their tree of Anat.” So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
They were latecomers who had not acquired sufficient knowledge. They passed by a people who had a tree around which they would prostrate and to which they would tie their weapons, seeking blessing from it. These Companions, who were new to Islam, said: “O Messenger of Allah, make for us a tree of Anawat, just as they had their tree of Anawat.” He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Blessing is sought from Allah, and not from anyone else; not from trees, not from stones, not from people, not from the living, and not from the dead. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) used to seek blessing from the saliva of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), from his hair, and from his clothes, because
Allah made this Messenger blessed, and this is one of his special characteristics (peace and blessings be upon him). Therefore, the Companions did not seek blessing from the best of them after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), such as Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, Uthman, and Ali (may Allah be pleased with them), because they knew that this is not permissible and that this is specific to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.

Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. These are the ways of the past. You said, by Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, just as the Children of Israel said: “Make for us a god as they have gods.” He said: “Indeed, you are a people who know not.” You will surely follow the ways of those who were before you.
Allah made this Messenger blessed, and this is one of his special characteristics (peace and blessings be upon him).
