The Sunnah and scholarly consensus indicate the punishment of the grave.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for the Sunnah, it is clear and well-known in affirming the punishment of the grave.
As for scholarly consensus, I ask you: Do Muslims say in their prayers
let him seek refuge with Allah from four things: From the torment of Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the Fitnah (tribulation) of Masihud-Dajjal. أعوذ بالله من عذاب جهنم ومن عذاب القبر ومن فتنة المحيا والممات ومن فتنة المسيح الدجال
Sunan Ibn Majah 909Sahih (Darussalam)
or do they not say it? Yes, all Muslims, yes, all Muslims say this.
let him seek refuge with Allah from four things: From the torment of Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the Fitnah (tribulation) of Masihud-Dajjal. أعوذ بالله من عذاب جهنم ومن عذاب القبر ومن فتنة المحيا والممات ومن فتنة المسيح الدجال
Sunan Ibn Majah 909Sahih (Darussalam)
And there is no seeking refuge from something unless it has a real existence. So the punishment of the grave is established. And is it possible for the punishment of the grave to be shown to people?
The answer is: No, except that Allah may reveal it. Otherwise, the default is that it is not revealed. Its non-revelation is a mercy from Allah for the deceased and a mercy from Allah for the deceased's relatives and companions. As for the deceased, he has been buried now and covered, and we do not know about his sins. But if we heard him being punished, we would certainly think ill of him. As for the deceased's people, it is obvious that if they heard the voice of their father or mother being punished in the grave, the world would become narrow for them. But Allah (Mighty and Majestic) conceals it, except that He may reveal it for a religious benefit. This is in what is established in the two Sahihs from 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father), who said:
the Prophet came upon two graves and said, "Their occupants are being punished مر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بقبرين فقال إنهما ليعذبان إنهما ليعذبان
Mishkat al-Masabih 338
. In this phrase, there is emphasis, indeed there are two emphases: "Indeed they are being punished." There are two emphases?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : And the other? Two emphases.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : The lam is the lam of emphasis. And the second one here, "inna," is also emphasized. There are two emphases: the first is "inna" and the second is the lam.
"Indeed they are being punished." إنهما ليعذبان
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) emphasized the report, even though he is the truthful one who is verified without emphasis, because of the importance of the subject. He said:
They are being punished but they are not being punished for anything major. إنهما ليعذبان وما يعذبان في كبير
Sunan Ibn Majah 349Sahih (Darussalam)
Does this mean in a major of the major sins? Or in a matter that is difficult for them? The second is what is intended, meaning they are not being punished for a matter that is difficult for them to leave. Leaving it is easy.
