Delaying the payment of zakah
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 14078 )
Q: I have a friend whose father has passed away, and his grandmother—meaning his father’s mother—is still alive. She has money that has been with her for several years, and the source of this
money is either from the zakah of some people of good, or from voluntary charity, or from what her grandson—my friend—gives her. She is a woman of advanced age, and no one provides for her except her grandson and people of good. So, is zakah due on the money she has accumulated? Even though several years have passed, the number of which we do not know, and she does not spend anything from this money because she does not support anyone with her; she lives alone with a few sheep she raises, which do not exceed five goats. Knowing that she gave her grandson a sum of money to buy him a car, because no one provides for him except social security, and the money he inherited from his father—may Allah have mercy on him—which is a small amount not exceeding fifty thousand riyals, and he is now living with his mother’s husband. And Allah is the one behind the intention, and peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
A: Zakah is obligatory on the money with the grandmother and the money with the grandson for all the past years, and the obligatory amount is one-quarter of one-tenth for each year, along with repentance to Allah the Exalted for delaying the payment of zakah. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
