Ruling on Delaying the Payment of Zakah Beyond Its Due Time
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: His Eminence, the Father, Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Baz, the Grand Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the President of the Committee of Senior Scholars and the Administration of Supreme Research and Ifta, may Allah guide you to all good, amen. Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.
We inform Your Eminence that my uncle pays the zakah of his wealth every year at the beginning of the blessed month of Ramadan. He currently wishes to pay the zakah every year at the beginning of Muharram in order to meet the needs of the needy people. How should he handle the difference of the three months between Ramadan and Muharram? If my uncle has real estate and lands offered for sale, how should he calculate the zakah: from the value of the land or from the listed selling price?
We ask Your Eminence to kindly provide an answer due to its importance. May Allah reward your efforts, benefit us with your knowledge, and bless your time. May He make you a helper and a refuge for the student of knowledge, and grant you the highest level of Paradise. Indeed, He is the Generous, the Bountiful. Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.
A: And upon you be peace, and Allah’s mercy and blessings, after that:
Your uncle is not permitted to delay the zakah until Muharram. However, it is permissible for him to pay the zakah early, before Ramadan, in Muharram or any other month. He must pay the zakah on the real estate based on its value at the time the zakah is paid. May Allah accept from everyone. Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.
