Zakah on a grant if it is intended for sale
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 16852 )
Q: I have a residential plot of land, a royal grant from the ruler (may Allah preserve him), and I have held it for a period of no less than five years. I do not know whether the obligatory zakah is due on this land or not; because some people say that zakah is due on it, and to be safe, I ask you
to inform me about this, may Allah guide you. Am I required to pay zakah on it annually, or is the zakah due when we are certain to sell it and receive its value? Please give us a ruling, may Allah reward you with good.
A: If you do not intend to sell it but rather intend to build on it, then there is no zakah on it. The same applies if you are undecided about selling it or keeping it. However, if you are certain to sell it, the zakah year begins from the time you intend to sell it. You then pay its zakah based on the value it equals at the completion of each year. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
