Q: I went to perform the lesser pilgrimage in the year 1412 AH, and on the way, my
menstrual period started. When we arrived at the place of residence, my family went to perform the lesser pilgrimage, and I remained behind. They asked me when I would become pure, and out of shyness and ignorance, I answered them, "Tomorrow," because I wanted to perform the lesser pilgrimage; for it was the first time in my life that I was going to Makkah . I started drinking cold liquids and bathing with cold water, thinking that this would stop the period. I went to the miqat and bathed with cold water, entered the state of ihram, and wore clean clothes. I placed a white handkerchief in the place where the blood was coming from, then I performed the tawaf and sa'y, and shortened my hair. After that, I went to check if any blood had come out, and I found two drops of red blood on the handkerchief. I do not know if they came out during the tawaf or the sa'y. Four years after this lesser pilgrimage, I took a hajj as a tamattu' pilgrim with the lesser pilgrimage, and then I got married, O honorable Mufti. Is my lesser pilgrimage invalid? Does the hajj count as a tamattu' with the lesser pilgrimage that suffices for it? Is the marriage contract invalid and must it be renewed? And is a sacrificial animal required of me?

A: The lesser pilgrimage you performed while menstruating is not valid. Consequently, you remain in its state of ihram. Your ihram for the lesser pilgrimage with which you combined it with the hajj is not valid; because you were in a previous state of ihram, your ihram for that second lesser pilgrimage is a continuation of the previous lesser pilgrimage, and your hajj becomes an ifrad. However, if the marriage contract took place after that, it is valid; because you had exited the previous state of ihram.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
