Fatwa No. ( 15429 )
Q: I received from the monasteries last year, 1411 AH, a sum to settle a debt, and I had already paid zakah on it in Ramadan of 1411 AH. I still have a remaining amount from which I lent out four hundred thousand riyals for the value of cars in Dhul-Hijjah of 1411 AH, and five thousand cartons of soap, and also one thousand five hundred cartons in Rabi' al-Awwal of 1412 AH, and also four thousand nine hundred and ninety-three cartons. This is the total amount I have lent out. I ask Allah, then your Eminence, to clarify what zakah is required of me. Does zakah apply to the profit whose time has not yet come, or is it limited to the principal only when paying zakah in Ramadan? In our current time, repayment is not obtained except after a year, two years, or more, and the profit, as Allah knows, may be an increase or a decrease. I ask your Eminence to clarify what must be done.
A: Zakah is obligatory on you from the principal and its profit whenever the lunar year has passed, and the lunar year of this profit follows the lunar year of its principal. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
