He says in his first question: What is the meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And whoever turns away from My remembrance, for him will be a miserable life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind. He will say, ‘My Lord, why have You gathered me blind when I used to have sight?’ He will say, ‘Thus came to you Our verses, but you forgot them, and thus today you are forgotten.’”

The questioner : He says in his first question: What is the meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted [Taha 20:124-126] Does its meaning apply to one who memorized something of the Qur'an and then forgot it due to negligence, lack of free time, and not being consistent in reading it?
The Shaykh : The meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Taha 20:124] is that everyone who turns away from the remembrance of Allah, and this includes turning away from His remembrance which is the Qur'an and the revelation He sent down upon His prophets and messengers, and it includes the remembrance which is the remembrance of Allah the Exalted with the heart, with the tongue, and with the limbs. So whoever turns away from this and this, he will be punished with this great punishment. Indeed, for him will be a miserable life. It was said that the meaning of this miserable life is: the tightening of the grave upon him after his death. And it was said: the meaning is broader than that, and that even if he remains in this world, he will not have an open chest and a tranquil heart. And that is because there is no life more pleasant or sweeter than the life of one who believes in Allah and does good deeds, as Allah the Exalted said: [An-Nahl 16:97] And some of the Salaf said: If the kings and the sons of kings knew what we are in, they would fight us for it with swords. Because faith with good deeds obligates for the person openness and tranquility, and there will be light in his heart, and he will be satisfied with the decree and destiny of Allah in what is disliked and what is loved. So there is no one more blessed than him. And this saying is closer to the truth: that the miserable life includes this and this in the grave, as well as in this world. As for after the gathering, he will be gathered, may Allah protect us, on the Day of Resurrection blind, as Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Isra 17:97] And at that time he will ask, not a question of seeking pardon, but a question of exposing [Taha 20:125] And this is for the establishment of the argument against him and his humiliation, may Allah protect us, on the Day of Resurrection. So Allah will say to him: [Taha 20:126-127] Yes.
(124) And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind." (125) He will say, "My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?" (126) [Allah] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten."
