Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And whoever turns away from My remembrance, then for him will be a miserable life” ? And what is meant by turning away from the verses?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for the exegesis of the verse, as far as I recall at this moment, it is His saying - the Exalted - :
And whoever turns away from My remembrance
[Taha 20:124]
. That is, he turned away from My Book and My Qur'an, turning away from it in arrogance. The first thing mentioned as "remembrance" is the Qur'an, as He - the Exalted - said:
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian.
[Al-Hijr 15:9]
So Allah - Mighty and Majestic - informs us of the state of the one who turns away from following His Book, his state in this world and his state in the Hereafter. He says:
And whoever turns away from My remembrance
[Taha 20:124]
from My Book and from following it and acting upon it, so his reward is that he will have
a miserable life مَعِيشَةً ضَنْكًا
meaning: he will have a severe, miserable life in this worldly life. And the opposite, or is it not the opposite? In addition to that, He - the Exalted - says:
and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind." وَنَحْشُرُهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَعْمَى
[Taha 20:124]
meaning that Allah - Mighty and Majestic - punishes the disbeliever in this world before the Hereafter because of his turning away from His remembrance and following His Book. This does not pose a difficulty for us, for we see many disbelievers and open sinners enjoying themselves in this world just as livestock enjoy themselves, so we think they are happy and living in ease, and we envy them for it. It is not befitting for a Muslim to think this of these disbelievers or open sinners, because the truth is that these people who live in opposition to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) are living, as He - the Exalted - said, a miserable life. Even if we see them amusing themselves, eating, drinking, and enjoying themselves, this joy is not the apparent joy that you see, such as wearing beautiful, shiny clothes, but his heart boils with fear for his health, fear for his children, and fear that death will come suddenly. So in his heart, he lives a miserable and severe life. Therefore, we should not be deceived by the appearances we see. On the contrary, we find a believing, pious, righteous man with tattered clothes and a tattered appearance, but he is content in his soul and at peace in his mind. Why? Because he lives for Allah and dies for Allah - Mighty and Majestic - so he does not fear what this disbeliever fears, which is being punished in this world before the Hereafter. He knows with certainty that his life in the Hereafter is that he will be gathered blind, as our Lord said in this verse. He fears the emergencies of time in this worldly life. As for the Muslim, he does not live this miserable life. Why? Because a single hadith that he remembers makes his life a comfortable and happy one, even if he eats dry bread and drinks murky water. Because what is important is not the material and the body, but rather the stability of the soul and the heart. A single hadith makes the Muslim happy in his life in this world before the Hereafter. For example, his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Wondrous is the affair of the believer, all of it; if good befalls him, he praises Allah and gives thanks, and it is better for him; and if bad befalls him, he is patient, and it is better for him. So the affair of the believer is all good, and that is not the case except for the believer.
. So, a person does not escape in this life; either he lives in joy or he lives in sorrow, or somewhere in between. If sorrow equals joy for the Muslim, and if hardship equals happiness for the believer, then his entire life is good for him, and he lives in a happy life. As for the disbeliever, it is the opposite; he toils and suffers in order to gather wealth, then the opportunity arises for him to eat something delicious, but he does not feel happiness in these mouthfuls he eats, because before and after them, he is surrounded by toil, fatigue, and strain to gather this wealth and guard it. He fears it will be stolen or looted; therefore, he leaves it in the bank, fearing that the bank will go bankrupt and all his money will be lost. So he is always, forever, however he turns and however he moves, in a miserable life, as He - the Exalted - said:
And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind." وَمَنْ أَعْرَضَ عَنْ ذِكْرِي فَإِنَّ لَهُ مَعِيشَةً ضَنْكًا وَنَحْشُرُهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَعْمَى
[Taha 20:124]
meaning he does not find a path that leads him to tranquility and a happy life, because Allah - Mighty and Majestic - only guides the path of the one who turns to Him in this world, and then in the Hereafter. So light is before him and light is behind him; they walk in light, and that light leads them to their path to Paradise. As for the disbeliever, he is resurrected blind and says, "My Lord, why have You resurrected me blind while I was seeing?" Meaning, in this world You created me seeing, so why do You now resurrect me blind? Our Lord - Blessed and Exalted - answers him with the summary of the verse: the reward is of the same kind as the deed. He - Blessed and Exalted - said:
[Allah] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten."
[Taha 20:126]
I created you seeing not so that you would exploit this blessing and others in disobedience to Me, but I created you seeing so that you would discern the path of truth and follow it to please Me. But you did not do that. Our verses came to you, meaning the verses of Allah, meaning the remembrance from which you turned away, and you forgot them. The forgetting here does not mean the verses leaving the memory, but rather the forgetting here means abandonment and turning away.
Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them
[Taha 20:126]
meaning you turned away from them and abandoned acting upon them.
And thus, on this Day, you will be forgotten.
, Allah - Mighty and Majestic - does not forget, of course. Therefore, this is an indication that the forgetting intended in the two places in the verse is abandonment and turning away. As I said, the reward is of the same kind as the deed. Just as this blind man turned away in this world from the remembrance of Allah - Mighty and Majestic - and acting upon it, making it forgotten and neglected, so our Lord - Mighty and Majestic - rewards him with a reward of the same kind as his deed: He forgets him, turns away from him, and casts him into Hell, and evil is the destination. This is the meaning of the verse:
And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed life
[Taha 20:124]
in this world
and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind." (125) He will say, "My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?" (126) [Allah] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them وَنَحْشُرُهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَعْمَى * قَالَ رَبِّ لِمَ حَشَرْتَنِي أَعْمَى وَقَدْ كُنْتُ بَصِيرًا * قَالَ كَذَلِكَ أَتَتْكَ آيَاتُنَا فَنَسِيتَهَا
[Taha 20:124-126]
meaning you abandoned acting upon them.
And thus, on this Day, you will be forgotten.
meaning We leave you in Hell, far from My mercy, My pardon, and My pleasure. This is what was facilitated regarding this verse.

The questioner: Our verses came to you.

The Shaykh : Our verses.

The questioner: ... meaning not reading and reflecting ... ?

The Shaykh : No, no, because this is turning away. This is forgetting the recitation. What you mean here is not what is intended. Perhaps you were given a hadith, and the hadith is weak, and its meaning is:
That whoever memorizes something of the Qur'an, then forgets it, will come on the Day of Resurrection leper.
This hadith is weak in its chain, without a doubt.

The questioner: What is leprosy...

The Shaykh : A leper, a leper, one afflicted with the disease of leprosy. Afflicted with the disease of leprosy. But the hadith is weak. The important thing in this verse is that the intended meaning of "forgetting" here is abandoning the action. Otherwise, if we assume a person knows many of the rulings of the Qur'an, such as prayer and zakah, but memorized the verses concerning them and then forgot them, while Allah says to him:
Establish prayer.
he establishes the prayer
And give the zakah.
he gives the zakah, he performs Hajj to the House and performs Hajj, fulfilling the obligations of Allah - Mighty and Majestic - but he is not a student of knowledge who memorized surahs or verses from surahs of the Qur'an at first, and with time forgot them. There is no doubt that this is not perfection, but is this called
Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them
[Taha 20:126]
? No, the intended meaning of "forgetting" here is abandoning the action, not forgetting the recitation at all.

The questioner: Shaykh ... Our verses.

The Shaykh : Our verses
Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten." كَذَلِكَ أَتَتْكَ آيَاتُنَا فَنَسِيتَهَا وَكَذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ تُنْسَى
[Taha 20:126]
Here are questions we will answer briefly, as the time has run late. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. The first question.
