Zakat on funds collected from benefactors by a charitable organization if a lunar year has passed over them

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 16350 )
Q: The charitable organization for memorizing the Qur'an in Abha has zakat and charity funds from some benefactors. Some were sent to us this year, 1413 AH, and others from previous years. We want to clear our conscience regarding them. Is zakat due on them, and what is the amount? Especially for those on which more than one lunar year has passed.
A: There is no zakat on funds collected from benefactors by a charitable organization if a lunar year has passed over them; because these are funds intended to be distributed to those in need, and they do not have a specific owner. Zakat is only obligatory on funds that have a specific owner. It should be known that it is not permissible to delay distributing zakat
to the eligible recipients beyond the time it is due. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
