Fatwa number ( 18620 )
Q: I have a married daughter, and her mahr (bridal gift) is in my trust. When she visited, she said: “I want you to take the mahr you are holding in trust, an amount of six thousand riyals (6000), as my contribution to building the mosque.” I was concerned about her donating this amount and told her that one thousand riyals (1000) would be sufficient. Since then, she has not spoken to me, as if she is angry with me for refusing her request, as she desires to carry out her wish. My question is: Am I sinful for not accepting her donation for building the mosque, and should I carry out her request even if it results in a decrease in her wealth? Please issue a ruling, may Allah reward you with good, and peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
A : The daughter’s charity and her donation for the expansion of the mosque construction is a good, recommended act, and obedience to the father is obligatory. Her father did not prevent her from donating in the first place; rather, he ordered her to reduce the contribution, seeking her benefit. Therefore, the father is not sinful in this. However, it is better to carry out her request; for therein lies great good and a great reward, with the hope of abundant replacement from Allah; for Allah the Exalted said:
And whatever good you put forward for yourselves - you will find it with Allah. It is better and greater in rewardوَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا لأَنْفُسِكُمْ مِنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ هُوَ خَيْرًا وَأَعْظَمَ أَجْرًا
[Al-Muzzammil 73:20]
,
and He the Exalted said:
But whatever thing you spend [in His cause] - He will compensate it; and He is the best of providers."وَمَا أَنْفَقْتُمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ فَهُوَ يُخْلِفُهُ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ الرَّازِقِينَ
[Saba 34:39]
. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
