Making three-dimensional models from wood to teach Islamic rituals

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 20266 )
Q: In our country, Morocco, there is a man who teaches people the rituals of Hajj in a practical way. He has made them a colored wooden frame, painted black, that resembles the Ka'bah, as well as the Station of Ibrahim, al-Safa, and al-Marwah, and Zamzam, and the Jamarat, and other things related to the rituals of Hajj. The training process involves people bringing their ihram garments to be put on, and then performing the rituals, starting from 'Umrah to the end of Hajj. They raise their voices in the talbiyah inside the mosque in a collective manner. This phenomenon has begun to spread in all regions of Morocco, to the extent that if you enter some mosques, you find a wooden frame resembling the Ka'bah and everything related to the rituals present throughout the year. We request from you, O honorable father, that you clarify
the ruling of the Shari'ah in this matter, knowing that this training on the rituals of Hajj is filmed on camera, and video tapes are distributed to people.

A: Making three-dimensional models from wood or other materials for some Islamic rituals, such as the Ka'bah, the Station of Ibrahim, and the Jamarat, for the purpose of using them in teaching the performance of the rituals of Hajj and 'Umrah as described in the question, is not permissible; rather, it is a blameworthy religious innovation. This is due to the legal concerns it leads to, such as the attachment of hearts to these models—even if only after some time—and exposing them to desecration, among other things. Furthermore, there is no need for this method, as explanation and clarification by speech, aided by explanatory writing, is sufficient and comprehensive in conveying the legal meanings to the general public. It is authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملاً ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
It was narrated by Muslim in his (Sahih). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
