Making the Casket from Other Than Wood

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Praise be to Allah alone, and blessings and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. Then, the Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from the questioner, the Deputy Secretary General of the Jeddah Services, via the Director of the Da'wah Center in Jeddah , and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with number (4236) and date 11/4/1423 AH. The questioner asked a question, the text of which is as follows:
We have observed that the caskets for carrying the dead are made of very heavy beech wood , which leads to much fatigue and hardship for those who carry the deceased. Out of our desire to improve the means used in cemeteries and to alleviate the burden on the deceased's family while carrying him on their shoulders, we have decided to change the heavy wooden caskets and replace them with caskets made of light aluminum, if that is permissible in the Shari'ah.

After studying the inquiry, the Committee responded that there is nothing wrong with making caskets for the dead from any suitable material that achieves the purpose of carrying the deceased, provided there is no exaggeration in it and nothing that burdens those who carry the dead; because the Shari'ah has not specified a particular material for making caskets.
