The Shaykh mentioned the hadith of the plank and the hadith of the cloud.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect. و من يتق الله يجعل له مخرجا و يرزقه من حيث لا يحتسب
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, and the hadith is in Sahih al-Bukhari: There was a man among those before you who was wealthy, so a man came to him and said, "Lend me a thousand dinars." He said, "Bring a guarantor." He said, "Allah is the guarantor." He said, "Bring a witness." He said, "Allah is the witness." I am inserting a parenthetical remark to alert you so that you hear the hadith. The witness said, "Allah is the witness. Allah is the guarantor."

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh: So I want to direct your attention to the story so that you hear it now. He will be talking about the wealthy lender and the poor borrower. These are a group of dervishes, meaning that we are now going to be like their story. Look at the end of the story: how did our Lord look upon the dervishes? They were not looking at their own condition; they were not dervishes, but they were cultured and educated in the principles of trade, buying, and selling, and so on. This is a parenthetical remark. The point is, he lent him a thousand dinars with no witness and no guarantor except Allah, and they agreed on the day of repayment.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh: And the man went out to sea and went to trade with this money, meaning to do business.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh: The day of repayment came, and the man was unable to return to the town and hand over the thousand dinars. So what did he do? He took a plank and carved it, and he carved it well, and he packed a thousand dinars inside it and sealed it well. Then he came to the seashore and said, "O Allah, You were the guarantor and You were the witness," and he threw this plank into the sea... We today...

The questioner: They say we are crazy, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh: Crazy, hehe. Because we have spoiled it, so be patient with us for a while. Let me finish the hadith.

The questioner : Please, Shaykh.

The Shaykh: And I hope you keep in mind that this is a Prophetic hadith, not my hadith. It is the hadith of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

The questioner: (peace and blessings be upon him).

The Shaykh: The point is that Allah (Mighty and Majestic), by His vast power, commands the wave to take the plank to the shore of the man, the lender, the benefactor. The benefactor went out on the appointed day to meet the debtor, but he noticed that the wave was playing with this plank. He reached out his hand to it, and lo, it was heavy with a thousand dinars of gold. He took it to his house and broke it open. The thousand dinars were there. The man was amazed. Later, Allah made it easy for the debtor to return to his town, and he ignored what he had done. Look, this is not madness; this is a man of reason. Why? Because he knew that he had done an act contrary to the natural laws of the universe. What did he find? A plank with a thousand dinars in the sea. If... Excellent. The man, hehe, did not... stand.

The questioner: He, O Shaykh, if a man of excellence says to you, "We do not guarantee one hundred percent."

The Shaykh: This is it. The original point is that he knows what he is doing, but the strength of his reliance upon Allah is what carried him to do what the sensible do not do. And therefore, he testified against himself and ignored what he had done. He came to the wealthy lender and paid him a thousand dinars, so it became two thousand. But look, the proverb is realized here: "Birds of a feather flock together." Pure hearts, strong faith. This is what we need. If one of us today had this story happen with a wealthy man, who saw the plank, split it open, and found a thousand dinars inside, no one would take the second thousand and keep it!

The questioner: It is a provision that Allah brought to him.

The Shaykh: Ah, so the creditor was amazed by this story. It was not possible for him to say anything other than, "By Allah, that day I was waiting for you and went out to meet you, and when you did not come, I saw the story of the plank and how I took it to my house and broke it open and found a thousand dinars." He said, "By Allah, that was my intention." He told him how tight his time was, how he brought the plank, packed the thousand dinars in it, threw it in the sea, and relied upon Allah, and so on. He said to him, "May Allah bless you in your wealth," and returned the thousand dinars to him. And they said, "Allah has discharged your debt for you." Ah, so I say, and this is the witness, and another witness follows it: when Muslims are in their dealings lawful and relying upon Allah, they do not need all the means that the disbelievers have brought!

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh: Perhaps, perhaps our fathers did not know anything called a bank, right? And so on. Well, how were they able to live like that with this purity and this cooperation? Another story exactly like this. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

While a man from among those before you was walking in a desolate part of the land, he heard a voice from a cloud saying to the cloud, "Rain upon the land of so-and-so." The cloud was moving like this, heading this way, obedient to the voice, "Rain upon the land of so-and-so." He was walking in the land. It is like our story; we have never heard a voice from the sky. This is a prophetic miracle! The questioner: Yes. The Shaykh: He walked with the cloud, wanting to see what... a little while, and the cloud descended to empty its load upon a garden, upon an orchard overlooking it. He found a man working with a hoe. The owner of the orchard greeted him. The owner was amazed to see a stranger from the land, so he asked him, "What brought you to this land?" So he told him, and the man learned that Allah had directed the cloud to this land, to this orchard. So he asked him, "By what did you deserve this miracle from Allah, that He directed the cloud for you?" He said, "By Allah, I am a servant among the servants of Allah, and I do not know, but I have this land. I plant it, then I harvest it, then I divide it into three parts: a part I return to the land, a part I spend on myself and my family, and a part I give in charity to the poor and the needy." He said to him, "Is this what you want? Better than this? This is the reason Allah directed the cloud for you."
This hadith and the one before it are a realization of the noble verse: و يرزقه من حيث لا يحتسب And will provide for him from where he does not expect[At-Talaq 65:3] If you have finished, O... Please go ahead.
