The postmenopausal woman who has reached the age of fifty when blood comes down upon her

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 21803 )
Q1: We prescribe to some patients who have stopped menstruating a medication to treat osteoporosis and to treat the symptoms resulting from the cessation of the menstrual cycle. This medication consists of hormones similar to the hormones responsible for menstruation. If the patient takes the treatment, the bleeding returns in a regular manner. The question is: Do we consider this blood a menstrual cycle, such that the patient refrains from prayer, fasting, and other things? Or do we consider it irregular bleeding? Some patients considered it a menstrual cycle and refrained from prayer. What should they do?
A1: If a postmenopausal woman who has reached the age of fifty has blood come down upon her, she does not consider it menstruation for which she would leave off prayer and fasting. Rather, she considers it bleeding or corrupt blood, especially if the cause of its coming down is known, which is taking the aforementioned medication.
