Fatwa number ( 21803 )
Q: We prescribe a medication to some patients who have reached menopause, to treat osteoporosis and the symptoms resulting from the cessation of menstruation. This medication consists of hormones similar to those responsible for menstruation. If the patient takes the treatment, the bleeding returns in a regular manner. The question is: Do we consider this blood to be a menstrual period, such that the patient refrains from prayer, fasting, and other acts of worship? Or do we consider it irregular bleeding? Some patients have considered it a menstrual period and refrained from prayer. What should they do?
A : A woman who has reached menopause due to attaining the age of fifty, if blood comes from her, she does not consider it menstruation for which she would leave off prayer and fasting. Rather, she considers it bleeding or corrupt blood, especially if the cause of its coming is known, which is taking the aforementioned medication. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
