Cultivation and Sale of Narcotics
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I am 'Abd al-Bari ibn 'Abd al-Hamid al-Afghani and I present to you a trial that our Afghan people have suffered in these recent years, which is the problem of narcotics, their cultivation, and their trade. This has spread to all categories of people, even to scholars who issue rulings permitting their cultivation and sale. They have many doubts, among which is that they see that through this work they can harm the disbelievers, and among which is their analogy to domestic donkeys, and among which is the lack of other means of livelihood. I ask you, may Allah reward you, to clarify the issue in detail and to make clear the truth and correctness in it. And may Allah reward you with good. And among their doubts is also that some scholars have permitted a small amount of opium or morphine in medical treatment.
A: The cultivation of narcotics, working in them by transporting them or otherwise, and trading in them in any way and under any circumstance are forbidden matters; indeed, they are among the greatest of major sins. This is because of the spread of corruption and cooperation in sin and aggression that results from them, considering the great harms that follow from their consumption on the individual and society, whether in the health, economic, or social sphere, as various studies issued by specialized centers have proven. All Muslim and non-Muslim states have agreed to prohibit them and to punish those who spread them in any way. As for the doubts mentioned by the questioner that those who deal in them raise, they are weak doubts that are given no consideration whatsoever, and they are of the nature of Satan adorning forbidden things for their perpetrators.
