If crops are struck by a blight before harvest that renders them unfit for consumption, no zakah is due on them

The first question of Fatwa No. ( 20382 )
Q1: We live in the desert and grow crops such as barley and wheat. Sometimes the crop appears in a state that prevents it from being harvested, so we sell it to a sheep owner who does with it as he pleases. How do we pay the zakah on this crop? Please advise us; may Allah reward you.
A1: If crops are struck by a blight before harvest that renders them unfit for consumption, no zakah is due on them, because one is unable to benefit from them. However, if
you sell them for money that reaches the nisab and a lunar year passes over it, then zakah becomes obligatory on it by paying one-tenth of it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
