Zakat on Olives

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 15201 )
Q1: I have an orchard planted with olive trees, watered by rain, and it is known that its zakat is one-tenth. However, this orchard has costs for plowing, fertilizer, and harvesting, etc., which may reach a quarter of its production. Should the zakat be calculated on the total production, or should the costs be deducted from the production and the zakat paid on the remainder?
A1: There is scholarly disagreement regarding the obligation of zakat on olives. The safest course for you is to pay zakat on them if the fruit reaches the nisab, which is five wasqs. One wasq is sixty sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) according to the sa' of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The amount of zakat is one-tenth of the fruit. As for the costs, they are not deducted from the fruit; rather, zakat is paid on the entire fruit. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
