Fatwa number ( 21468 )
Q: I hope you will issue a fatwa to me regarding camels prepared for racing for the purpose of trading in them. Is zakah due on them, and are they considered trade goods, or is zakah due on their value when they are sold and a lunar year has passed over their value? Please issue a fatwa, may Allah reward you with the best reward in this world and the Hereafter. Amen.
A: If these camels are prepared for racing with the intention of obtaining the prize awarded to the owner of the leading camel, and are not prepared for sale, then there is no zakah due on the camels themselves. Rather, zakah becomes obligatory on the money he obtains from their racing if a lunar year has passed over his possession of it and this money reaches the nisab, by paying out one-quarter of a tenth of it, that is, two and a half riyals per hundred. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
