Zakah on what is brought forth from the earth and zakah on livestock

This is a letter received from Faleh ibn Sa'id ibn Jawayd al-Balawi from North Al-Ula, as he says. In his letter, he says: I am a pious man who observes the limits of Allah and His obligations, including prayer, zakah, fasting, and Hajj. I have a family to support, and I have land, but I do not know the value of the zakah or the value of the zakah on sheep, nor the types from which I must pay zakah from my property. Please inform us, may Allah reward you?
Answer: Praise be to Allah. We ask Allah for success for you. A person should not praise himself and say, "I am pious." He should say, "I, praise be to Allah, fulfill the obligations of Allah and avoid the prohibitions of Allah." As for praising himself and saying, "I am pious, I am good, and I am such-and-such," it is better to leave that; because Allah says: [Surah al-Najm: 32]. But he should say, "By the praise of Allah, I avoid the prohibitions, I fulfill the obligations, and I ask Allah to accept them from me."
As for zakah, you must pay zakah on your wealth in which zakah is due. As for the land, if it is for agriculture or for residence, there is no zakah on it. The zakah is on what comes out of it in the form of grains, if it reaches the nisab. If the grains reach three hundred sa'—meaning five wasq by the sa' of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)—three hundred sa', then you pay zakah on it. Likewise, if there are dates in it... five wasq of dates, meaning three hundred sa' by the sa' of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), you pay zakah on it, at half a tenth, if you are irrigating it with pumps. You take out fifty from every thousand, from a thousand kilograms of dates, or a thousand kilograms of wheat, or other grains, you take out half a tenth if you are irrigating it with pumps.
As for if you are irrigating it with rain or with flowing springs that do not require effort, then it is a tenth. In every thousand, one hundred; in every thousand sa', one hundred sa'; in a thousand kilograms, one hundred kilograms, the tenth.
As for sheep, camels, and cattle, they have known thresholds if they are grazing. But if they are fed and not grazing, not taken out to graze, but in enclosures and in the farm, eating from the farm, then there is no zakah on them if they are for milk, offspring, and the need to slaughter from them. But if they are for sale for trade, you pay zakah on them as trade zakah. You pay zakah on their value: twenty-five from every thousand, a quarter of a tenth, and so on; because it is trade zakah like money. But if they are grazing in the wilderness for the whole lunar year or most of the lunar year, then you pay zakah on them as grazing livestock zakah, the zakah of camels, cattle, and sheep, and it varies.
You can ask the judge at your place to determine the zakah for you. In five camels, one sheep; in ten, two sheep; in fifteen, three sheep; in twenty, four sheep. If it reaches twenty-five camels, then in it is a bint makhad, a female, who has completed one year, called: .......... There is detail in this. You can write to us detailing what you have so that we can write the answer for you, or you can ask the honorable judge at your court and inform him.
Likewise for cattle, if they are grazing for most of the lunar year, in thirty there is a tabi'ah that has completed one year or a tabi'ah, and in forty there is a musinnah that has completed two years, and so on.
Likewise for sheep, if they are grazing for most of the lunar year or the whole lunar year, there is zakah on them if they reach forty. But if they reach less than forty, there is no zakah on them. But if they reach forty sheep, then in it is one sheep, up to one hundred and twenty. And if it exceeds one hundred and twenty by one and becomes one hundred and twenty-one, then in it are two sheep, up to two hundred. If it exceeds two hundred by one, then in it are three sheep, in two hundred and one or more, three sheep, and so on in every hundred sheep. If it reaches four hundred, then in it are four sheep. If it reaches five hundred, then in it are five sheep, and so on for grazing sheep. But if they are fed for most of the lunar year or the whole lunar year, then there is no grazing livestock zakah on them, but there is trade zakah if they are for trade, for buying and selling. There is trade zakah on them: twenty-five riyals from every thousand of their value, from every thousand. And if they are for eating, milk, offspring, and eating for guests and the like, not for sale, then there is no zakah on them if they are not grazing. And Allah is the guarantor of success. Yes.
