Zakat on the Property of Orphans
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 13989 )
Q: My father gave me a sum of money belonging to the orphans, who are his nephew’s children, to invest for them for a period of six years. I bought several cars and sold them on monthly installments, and the installments will end within two years, and so on until the agreed period ends. Since one year has passed, I ask: Is zakat obligatory on the orphan’s money? If it is obligatory, how is the zakat paid out of the installments? Whenever I receive two months’ worth of installments, I buy a car for the value of that amount. The orphans also have a sum of money kept with my father, from which their expenses are paid. Is zakat obligatory on that? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
A: Zakat is obligatory on the money mentioned, and the fact that the children are orphans does not prevent the obligation of zakat. When a lunar year passes over this money, whether in cash, cars, or debts owed to them by people in exchange for these cars, you must pay the zakat.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
