The questioner : If a person is missing one of the limbs required for ablution, such as a hand or a foot, for example, is he obligated to perform dry ablution in place of washing that missing limb, and what is the ruling if an artificial limb is fitted to him? Is he obligated to wash it during ablution or not?

The Shaykh : If a person is missing one of the limbs required for ablution, the obligation of washing it is dropped from him, without the need for dry ablution.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Because the place of the obligation is missing, it is not obligatory for him. Even if an artificial limb is fitted to him, he is not obligated to wash it. It is not said that this is like the leather socks, which he must wipe over, because the leather socks are worn over an existing limb that must be washed. As for this, it is made for him in place of a non-existent limb. However, the scholars say: if a limb is amputated at the joint, he is obligated to wash the end of the limb. For example, if it is amputated at the elbow, he is obligated to wash the end of the upper arm. If his leg is amputated at the knee, he is obligated to wash the end of the lower leg. Yes.
