The questioner : In his first question, he says that a disagreement arose between him and some of the brothers regarding the hadith concerning the occurrence of the evil eye from the envious person, which means "The evil eye is a reality, and if anything had preceded the divine decree, it would have been the evil eye". They say that this contradicts some of the verses, so what is the correct statement on this matter?

The Shaykh : The correct statement is what he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, which is
That the evil eye is a reality أن العين حق
This is a matter that reality has witnessed, and I do not know of any verses that contradict this hadith such that these people would say it contradicts the Qur'an. Rather, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has made a cause for every thing, to the extent that some of the exegetes said regarding His saying, the Exalted:
And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message وَإِنْ يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا الذِّكْرَ
[Al-Qalam 68:51]
They said: The intended meaning here is the evil eye. But in any case, whether this is the intended meaning of the verse or something else, the evil eye is established and it is a reality, and there is no doubt in it. Reality has witnessed to this since the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) until today. But what does one do if he is struck by the evil eye? He is treated with recitation. And if he knows who cast the evil eye, he is asked to perform wudu', and what falls from his wudu' water is taken and given to the one who cast the evil eye to pour over his head and back, and he is made to drink from it. By this, he is cured by the permission of Allah. It has become customary among us that they take from the one who cast the evil eye what directly touches his body, such as the undershirt and the cap, and the like. They soak them in water and then make the one who cast the evil eye drink from it. We have seen that this is beneficial, according to the reports that have reached us consistently.

The questioner : Do they make him drink from it who was struck by the evil eye?

The Shaykh : Yes, indeed.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : If this is the reality, there is no harm in using it, because if a cause is established as a cause by the Shari'ah or by sense, it is considered valid. As for what is not a cause by the Shari'ah or by sense, it is not permissible to rely on it, such as those who rely on amulets and the like, hanging them on themselves to ward off the evil eye. This has no basis, whether these are from the Qur'an or from other than the Qur'an. Yes.
