Adding Supplications to the Qunut

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 18069 )
Q: What is the ruling on one who adds some supplications to the Qunut of the Witr , and is it permissible or not permissible; because I read in the book *The Description of the Prophet's Prayer* by the Shaykh Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani that he said in it: It is from the Sunnah what we add in the Qunut of the Witr, only the prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); because the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them)
did that, and I hear, especially in the month of Ramadan, that some of the brothers add some supplications in the Qunut of the Witr?

A: It is established from the hadith of al-Hasan ibn 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught him the Qunut in the Witr. In the Musnad of Ahmad and the Sunan of Abu Dawud al-Tirmidhi al-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah and others, it is narrated that he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me words to say in the Witr:
“O God, guide me among those Thou hast guided, grant me security among those Thou hast granted security, take me into Thy charge among those Thou hast taken into Thy charge, bless me in what Thou hast given, guard me from the evil of what Thou hast decreed, for Thou dost decree and nothing is decreed for Thee. He whom Thou befriendest is not humbled. Blessed and exalted art Thou, our Lord.”
Mishkat al-Masabih 1273
. Al-Tirmidhi said: This is a good hadith, and we do not know anything better from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the Qunut than this. And the Hafith Ibn Hajar said: The hadith is good and authentic. And from 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say at the end of his Witr:
O Allah, I seek refuge in Thy good pleasure from Thy anger, and in Thy forgiveness from Thy punishment, and I seek refuge in Thy mercy from Thy wrath. I cannot reckon the praise due to Thee. Thou art as Thou hast praised Thyself.اللهم إني أعوذ برضاك من سخطك وبمعافاتك من عقوبتك، وأعوذ بك منك لا أحصي ثناءً عليك أنت كما أثنيت على نفسك
Sunan Abi Dawud 1427Sahih (Al-Albani)
. It was narrated by the five. If the supplicant adds other comprehensive supplications, especially from the supplications narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that is permissible; because it is of the same kind as the supplication of the Qunut, and it is a place for supplication. And this is what a group of scholars said. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
