The Adhan in the Ear of the Child

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q9: Is it recommended to recite the adhan in the ear of the child?
A9: It is recommended to recite the adhan in the right ear of the newborn and the iqamah in his left ear, and this is done when he is born, based on the hadith of 'Ubayd Allah ibn Abi Rafi' from his father (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
he saw God's messenger uttering the call to prayer in the ear of al-Hasan b. ‘Ali when Fatima gave birth to himرأيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أذن في أذن الحسن بن علي حين ولدته فاطمة بالصلاة رضي الله عنهما
Mishkat al-Masabih 4157
It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi , who said: This is an authentic hadith and it is acted upon—meaning: by the scholars—and it was also narrated by Ahmad , Abu Dawud , al-Hakim , al-Bayhaqi , and others. And upon this the Imam Ibn al-Qayyim relied in (Tuhfat al-Wadud fi Ahkam
al-Mawlood), and he titled the section: "The Recommendation of Reciting the Adhan in the Ear of the Newborn and the Iqamah in His Left Ear." Then he explained Ibn al-Qayyim the wisdom behind this, saying: The secret of the adhan—and Allah knows best—is that the first words to strike the human ear are the words of the adhan, which contain the majesty and greatness of the Lord and the testimony that is the first thing by which one enters Islam. Thus, this is like teaching the child the banner of Islam upon his entry into the world, just as he is taught the word of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) upon his exit from it. It is not strange for the adhan to reach his heart and affect him, even if he is not aware of it, along with another benefit: the fleeing of Shaytan from the words of the adhan. Shaytan was watching for him until he was born to accompany him in the trial that Allah decreed and willed, so his Shaytan hears what weakens him and angers him at the first moments of his attachment to him. In it is also the meaning that his call to Allah, to His religion of Islam, and to His worship precedes the call of Shaytan, just as the fitrah (the innate natural disposition) with which Allah created people preceded Shaytan's alteration of it and his turning them away from it, and for other wisdoms besides. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) knows best.
