The first question of Fatwa number ( 19179 )
Q1: While we were praying the 'Asr prayer in congregation in the mosque, the imam stood up at the end of the second rak'ah after prostration and forgot the first tashahhud. The followers opposed him and sat down for the tashahhud. Some of those sitting alerted the imam by saying, "Subhan Allah." The imam sat down to recite the first tashahhud and performed sujud al-sahw after the taslim. However, a man stood up among them saying that the prayer is invalid because the imam stood up and sat down by his command, and if the imam leaves the ground with his hands and knees, he does not return. Also, the followers did not follow the imam in standing up, so some people repeated the prayer and some left. Is the prayer invalid? Please provide a detailed answer. May Allah reward you with good?
A1: If the imam stands up for the third rak'ah and forgets the first tashahhud, and he has fully stood up, and some of the followers alert him, it is disliked for him to return. If he begins the recitation, it is forbidden for him to return. If he completes his prayer, he performs sujud al-sahw before the taslim; because the first tashahhud is an obligatory part of the prayer that is rectified
by sujud al-sahw, and the imam returning to his seat upon being alerted by the followers after he had fully stood up and before beginning the recitation does not affect the validity of your prayer. The prayer of the imam and the followers is valid, but the imam should not return to such a thing in the future for the reasons mentioned. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
