The Imam’s Forgetfulness in the First Tashahhud

Machine translationRead the Arabic original

The second question of Fatwa No. ( 10593 )

Q2: A man led us in a four-rak'ah prayer and forgot the first tashahhud, so he stood up. The ma'mumin said to him, "Subhan Allah," so he returned to sitting for the first tashahhud. Here, some of the ma'mumin stood up and separated from the imam and completed their prayers individually. What is the ruling on the prayer of the imam and those who sat with him, and the ruling on the prayer of those who stood up
and separated from him?

A2: The prayer of each of them is valid; because each of them built upon his own ijtihad. It is better for those who separated not to separate and to remain with their imam; because his return to sitting is permissible, as he had stood up and had not begun the recitation. Even if we assume that he returned after beginning the recitation out of ignorance of the legal ruling, his prayer would not become invalid. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
