Intending to perform the prayer of istikharah after beginning one of the regular voluntary prayers

Fatwa number ( 16729 )
Q: First: Is it possible to intend to perform the prayer of istikharah after I have begun one of the regular voluntary prayers or a voluntary prayer such as the greeting of the mosque, or must I have a separate intention specifically for the prayer of istikharah? Second: Is it prescribed to raise the hands during the supplication? Third: Is it permissible to seek guidance through a single prayer for more than one matter? Fourth: Is it prescribed to seek guidance regarding the timing of performing the lesser pilgrimage, such as saying: “O Allah, if You know that my going for the lesser pilgrimage tonight is good for me…” and specifying a particular time, or is there no seeking guidance in acts of obedience, neither in the act itself nor in the time of its performance? Fifth: Is what some people say correct, that if a person seeks guidance, he sees something in his sleep, or that he feels a sense of ease or the opposite in his heart regarding the matter for which he sought guidance, and then he does what his heart finds ease in? What is the correct view? May Allah reward you with good for knowing that
the good lies in what the person sought guidance for? Then I ask Allah by His exalted names and His beautiful attributes to bless your life and grant you Paradise with the prophets, the truthful ones, the martyrs, and the righteous, and good are those companions. Amen.

A: First: It is prescribed to perform a separate prayer for seeking guidance, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
When one of you intends to do something, let him pray two rak'ahs other than the obligatory prayerإذا هم أحدكم بالأمر فليصل ركعتين من غير الفريضة
. Second: It is permissible for you to raise your hands during the supplication for seeking guidance; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to raise his hands when he exerted himself in supplication. Third: It is permissible for you to seek guidance in a single prayer for more than one matter. Fourth: Seeking guidance regarding the lesser pilgrimage in terms of the time of going to it, not regarding the lesser pilgrimage itself, is permissible. Fifth: There is no truth to what is said about the connection between seeking guidance and dreams. As for feeling ease in the heart and the chest opening up regarding the matter for which you sought guidance, in proceeding with the matter or refraining from it, that is the correct path in proceeding with the matter or not. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
