Q: What is the ruling on one who does not stand in prayer, knowing that he is able to do so, but does this so that people will have pity on him and give him charity?
A: Standing in the obligatory prayer is a pillar of it, and it is not valid without it; because of the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:238] , and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Therefore, the one who prays the obligatory prayer while sitting without an excuse, his prayer is not valid; because he has left a pillar of the pillars of prayer. As for the voluntary prayer, it is valid for the one who sits, even if he has no excuse, and he gets half the reward of the one who stands. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
