Q: I entered the mosque during the Maghrib prayer and found that the imam had already prayed two rak'ahs, and I caught up with him in one. What should I do in the last rak'ah? Should I recite aloud or quietly? Many people recite it aloud, and I tell them that it should be quiet.
A: If one catches up with the imam in the last rak'ah of Maghrib, he joins him in it, and it becomes the first rak'ah for him. When the imam concludes the prayer, he stands up and performs a rak'ah, reciting aloud in it if he wishes—and that is better—or quietly. Then he sits for the first tashahhud, then stands up after it and performs the third rak'ah, sitting after it for the final tashahhud, reciting the tashahhud and concluding the prayer. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih al-Bukhari 635 . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
