A severed part of the hand: how to perform wudu'

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 18642 )
Q: Allah decreed upon me an accident that resulted in the amputation of the palm and part of the forearm of my left hand, and praise be to Allah for that. A portion of the left forearm remains from the elbow, and my problem, O honorable Shaykh, is that a prosthetic hand has been fitted covering the amputated part up to the elbow. Since the nature of my work as a doctor requires me to be away from home for a long period, approximately ten hours, and I perform the Zuhr and 'Asr prayers at the hospital, I find great difficulty in removing the prosthetic hand and the clothing on it during wudu', as the hand is attached by straps under the clothing on the right side of the body. So please inform us, may Allah reward you with good. Is it permissible for me to wipe over the prosthetic hand instead of washing the remaining part of the hand with the elbow, which is inside the prosthetic hand, due to the hardship of removing the hand, or is it not permissible?
A: If any part of the area where the obligation of wudu' applies remains from the severed part, it is obligatory to wash it, and wiping over the prosthetic limb does not suffice in this case, even if it covers the entire hand. Rather, it is obligatory to remove it when intending to perform wudu' or ghusl. However, if removing it when intending to perform wudu' causes you great hardship, it is permissible for you to wipe over it as one wipes over a cast, and you should be patient and seek reward in this. May Allah heal your affliction and magnify your reward. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
