How one whose right hand is amputated performs istinja'

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 18783 )
Q: A man whose right hand is amputated from the shoulder does everything with his left hand (istinja', madmadah...). Is this permissible? And in ghusl, he is unable to wash his private parts in all areas; is it permissible for him to seek help from his wife or not?
A: The legal principle in istinja' is that a person should perform istinja' with his left hand, and take the water for madmadah and istinshaq with his right hand, in honor of the right hand and to protect it from filth; for what was reported from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said:
God’s messenger used his right hand for his ablution water and his food, and his left hand for his evacuations and anything objectionable.كانت يد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم اليمنى لطهوره وطعامه، ويده اليسرى لخلائه وما كان من أذى
Mishkat al-Masabih 348
. However, in the case of injury to the right hand or its amputation, it is permissible to handle the water with the left hand in this case out of necessity. But regarding istinja', it is permissible for him to limit himself to istijmar with stones, tissues, and the like to remove the traces of impurity from the front and back, provided that he repeats wiping the place of impurity three times or more until the trace of impurity is removed, then he performs madmadah and istinshaq
and washes his face three times, then completes his wudu'. If he limits himself to washing the limbs of wudu' once or twice, that suffices, but three times is better, except for wiping the head, for the Sunnah is to wipe it once along with the ears. As for madmadah with the left hand, it is permissible in this case because he is unable to use the right hand. As for ghusl, if he is able to cover his entire body with water himself, that is preferable. If he is unable to do so, there is no harm in seeking help from his wife or the like to wash what he is unable to reach with water, but he must cover his 'awrah from anyone other than his wife. If he does not find anyone to help him wash the rest of his body, he performs tayammum for what remains, and that suffices for him; because the one unable to use water is in the ruling of the one who lacks it, and by his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
And if I order you to do something, then do of it as much as you can.إذا أمرتكم بأمر فأتوا منه ما استطعتم
Sahih al-Bukhari 7288
, and by His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He):
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacityلاَ يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلا وُسْعَهَا
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
