Praise be to Allah alone, and may prayers and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. Having reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from His Excellency, the Head of the Commission for Promoting Virtue and Prohibiting Vice in al-Mujaddarah Province, in his letter number (609/54)
dated 23/11/1431 AH, and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars, number (1513) dated 18/12/1431 AH. His Excellency asked a question, the text of which is as follows: The municipality has used the walls of some graveyards and their niches for artistic scenes and heritage models , and the like, as is clear in the attached photos. In accordance with the saying of Allah the Exalted:[An-Nahl 16:43], he has formulated this to seek a gentle issuance of a scholarly ruling on this specific action, so that we may address it in light of it.
After studying the inquiry, the Committee responded that using the cemetery walls with what was mentioned in the question, such as drawings and colors, is not appropriate and does not befit their status as a reminder to people; because that distracts the observer from reflection and remembering death. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2460Da'if (Darussalam). It was narrated by Ahmad , al-Tirmidhi , al-Nasa'i , and Ibn Majah with a good chain from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah .
