The Journey of Pleasure: Is It Permissible to Avail Oneself of the Dispensations of Travel?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question of Fatwa No. ( 18800 )
Q 2: I went out with my family, my brothers, and their family members on a land trip that is about 95 kilometers from the city where we live. When the time for the midday prayer arrived, I combined the midday and afternoon prayers, and likewise the sunset and night prayers when the time for the sunset prayer arrived (combining them early), on the assumption that the distance at which prayer is shortened is 85 kilometers squared. My father and my brothers objected to my combining these prayers early on the grounds that we went out for pleasure and relaxation and did not intend travel for this trip. What is the ruling on my combining the midday and afternoon prayers, and the sunset and night prayers, early? And am I correct in what I did?
A 2: If one travels to a place that is eighty kilometers from his town
it is recommended for him to shorten the four-rak'ah prayer to two rak'ahs. As for combining prayers, it is permissible for him when there is a need, such as if he is in the midst of a journey. However, if he is staying in a place, it is better for him to pray each prayer in its time, shortened, without combining, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did in Makkah and Mina during the Farewell Pilgrimage, unless he knows that his stay will exceed four days, in which case he must complete the prayer. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
