Q: We inform your eminence that we are a group who travel weekly to a farm behind Dharma , a distance of 85 km. We go from Wednesday morning until Friday evening, and we perform the congregational prayer of "Zuhr and 'Asr" combined and shortened, as well as all other times. On Friday, we pray it as a congregation for Jumu'ah, and after that we return to praying 'Asr shortened. I ask you to issue a ruling on this, knowing that I pray with the congregation, but I do not shorten the prayer; rather, I complete it and do not combine it with them. I ask you to issue a ruling on my practice: am I correct or not?
A: If the situation is as described, you are in the ruling of travelers, not in the ruling of residents, if you intend to stay in that place for four days or less. Accordingly, it is permissible for you to shorten the four-rak'ah prayers to two, and to combine Zuhr with 'Asr and Maghrib with 'Isha, either by advancing or delaying the combination. Jumu'ah prayer is not obligatory upon you; rather, you pray it as Zuhr like on other days. So you pray two rak'ahs for Zuhr shortened, and you intend with them Zuhr, and the recitation in them is silent. The best for you and those like you is to pray with the people if you hear the call to prayer, and you must complete the prayer; because if a traveler prays with those who complete the prayer, he is obligated to complete it. Also, the best for you is not to combine if you pray alone. And if you want to pray Jumu'ah, it is not permissible for you to pray it alone; rather, you must pray it with the people.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
