The second question of Fatwa number ( 16402 )
Q 2: If a person dies in our village, our congregation collects a financial contribution of one hundred riyals from each house and gives it to the deceased's relative as condolence money. Is this permissible? Also, his relatives, such as his paternal cousins or brothers, pay
five hundred riyals as a condolence gift or slaughter an animal in place of the condolence gift. Is this permissible?
A 2 : It is not permissible to impose a specific amount on a person to pay to the deceased's relatives, because this is consuming wealth unjustly. If someone wants to help the deceased's needy family as a voluntary contribution, that is a good thing. However, preparing feasts and slaughtering sheep by the deceased's people, and cooking food by them in what they call a condolence gathering, has no basis in the Shari'ah. Rather, it is one of the burdens and shackles. The Sunnah is for the deceased's relatives or their neighbors to prepare food for them according to their need, and present it to them because they are preoccupied with the calamity and unable to prepare food for themselves. This is because when the news of the death of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said to his family:Sunan Ibn Majah 1610Hasan (Darussalam) As for the family of the deceased, they are not to do that for people. This is because it is established from Jarir ibn 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "We used to consider gathering at the house of the deceased and preparing food after the burial to be part of wailing." But if they prepare ordinary food for themselves and for a guest who has come to stay with them, there is no harm in that. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
