Fatwa number ( 17385 )
Q: In the city of Riyadh , there are specific mosques where the funeral prayer is frequently performed, and they are known for this, such as the 'Atiqah Mosque and al-Rajhi Mosque in al-Rabwah . Many young people go to these mosques to pray in order to attain the virtue of praying over the deceased. The question is: Is this action permissible? Please issue a ruling, may Allah reward you.
A: The Shari'ah has come with the virtue of attending the funeral prayer and being present for the burial; because that is part of faith. It is established from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
(A believer) who accompanies the funeral procession of a Muslim out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's reward and remains with it till the funeral prayer is offered and the burial ceremonies are over, he will return with a reward of two Qirats. Each Qirat is like the size of the (Mount) Uhud. He who offers the funeral prayer only and returns before the burial, will return with the reward of one Qirat only.
Sahih al-Bukhari 47
. And the Imam al-Bukhari titled a chapter in his (Sahih) in the Book of (Faith) as: (Following the funeral is part of faith). This indicates the virtue of attending the funeral prayer and the burial, and that it is a recommended practice. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
