Is a woman prohibited from praying the funeral prayer?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: The sister who identified herself as (Muslimah) from Riyadh says: It is observed that women do not attend the funeral prayer, and the question for the honorable Shaykh is: Is this prohibited by the Shari'ah?

A: Praying over the funeral is prescribed for men and women; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who attends the funeral till the prayer is offered for (the dead), for him is the reward of one qirat, and he who attends (and stays) till he is buried, for him is the reward of two qirats.من شهد الجنازة حتى يصلى عليها فله قيراط ومن شهدها حتى تدفن فله قيراطان
Sahih Muslim 945a
It was said: O Messenger of Allah, what are the two qirats? He said:
Like two great mountainsمثل الجبلين العظيمين
meaning in terms of reward. It is agreed upon that it is authentic.
However, women are not permitted to follow the funeral procession to the cemetery; because they are prohibited from doing so, as established in the two authentic collections from Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) who said:
We were prevented from following the funeral, but that was not made binding on us.نهينا عن اتباع الجنائز ولم يعزم علينا
Sunan Ibn Majah 1577Sahih (Darussalam)
As for praying over the deceased, women were not prohibited from it, whether the prayer is in the mosque, in the house, or in the prayer area, and the women used to pray over the funerals in the mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and after him.
As for visiting graves, it is specific to men, just like following the funeral procession to the cemetery; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed women who visit graves, and the wisdom behind this—Allah knows best—is what is feared regarding their following the funeral processions to the cemetery and their visiting graves, in terms of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) for them and upon them, and based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
I have not left behind me a trial more injurious to men than women.ما تركت بعدي فتنة أضر على الرجال من النساء
Mishkat al-Masabih 3085
It is agreed upon that it is authentic. And success is from Allah.
