The second question of fatwa number ( 2514 )
Q2: I read in the school textbooks that the salam in the funeral prayer is on the right only, but I read in other books that the salam in the funeral prayer is on the right and the left. What is the most correct view, with the reasoning?
A2: The funeral prayer is among the acts of worship, and the original rule in acts of worship is that they are based on specific evidence,
and the salam from it is established by the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in prayer: The practice of the Companions and the Tabi'un (may Allah be pleased with them) continued with a single salam on the right from the funeral prayer, and no disagreement was known among them regarding that, and it is not established from any of them, as far as we know, that he turned away from it with two salams. Rather, some jurists differed on this after them, by analogizing it to the prayers that include bowing and prostration, and analogy is not applied in acts of worship; because they are based on what the Qur'an indicated or what was established by the Sunnah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
